Travelodge, a budget hotel brand in the UK renowned for its 600-plus hotels, has taken a major step forward by acquiring six hotels, comprising a total of 773 rooms, in Spain from Louvre Hotels Group.
The hotels, which currently operate under the Campanile brand, comprise five freehold properties and one long leasehold property. These strategic acquisitions are facilitated by Travelodge OpCo's Spanish subsidiaries and are strategically located in Alicante, Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga and Murcia. This expansion marks a quantum leap for Travelodge, doubling its presence in the dynamic Spanish hospitality market.
This latest transaction demonstrates Travelodge's commitment to expanding its presence in key markets and enhancing its offerings to meet the changing needs of travellers. As Spain is an attractive tourist destination, this move enables Travelodge to capitalise on the growing demand for affordable yet quality accommodation options.
The announcement follows Travelodge's formation of a new property ownership group, the 'Travelodge PropCo Group', established in January 2024. This entity has been formed to acquire 66 freehold and long leasehold assets in the UK previously held by T&L Holdco Limited. Notably, T&L Holdco Limited is the direct parent company of Thame and London Limited, the umbrella company of the Travelodge OpCo Group.
As a result of these strategic moves, Travelodge is poised for further growth in the UK and Spanish markets.
"Spain is an important market for us, with an established presence of six hotels and an experienced local management team. We recognise there are significant ongoing opportunities for our business, with the potential to offer good value and quality accommodation in many more locations across the country. Last year we identified the top 20 key markets to open a new hotel in Spain, where there is currently a shortage of good quality, low cost, branded accommodation to meet the needs of business and leisure guests.
We are excited to announce the acquisition of these properties from Louvre Hotels Group as part of our Spanish development strategy. This doubles our presence in Spain and gives us the ideal base to build our brand even further. We look forward to working with our new colleagues, and growing our hotel network further, providing further choice and great value to business and leisure travellers across Spain." - Jo Boydell, CEO of Travelodge
