According to a study by the DGCIS, in a partnership with Insee, the occupancy at tourist accommodations in France rose 0.7% in 2013, over 2012.
The growth is thanks to foreign clientele, which increased by 4.8%, making up for the 1.2% drop in French occupancy.
In terms of type of accommodations, campgrounds and tourist residences benefited from the increase in occupancy, with respective growth by 2.8% and 1.5% in their number of nights. Hotels, meanwhile, are seeing a downturn with 197.9 million nights, or 0.3% fewer than in 2012. Holiday villages saw their occupancy rate decrease by 2.3%.
Coastal and urban areas are the geographic zones that did the best, especially the conurbations of Paris and Marseille, which bore the title of European Capital of Culture for the year.
