Airbnb to collect tourist tax for its Parisian hosts

The community website announced the implementation of an automated process for collecting the Paris tourist tax that is now obligatory for private accommodation rentals.

While the tourist tax has already been applicable to private accommodation rentals for several months already, Airbnb hopes to simplify its collection process for its hosts. Starting October 1, 2015, the community website will collect the tax on behalf of Parisian renters. This simplified collection process should then be unfurled in other towns in France.

This way, apartment owners will no longer have to collect the tax from each tourist to pay it to the town; instead the process will be fully automated on the platform. The tax will be added to the amount of the reservation paid by tourists and will be transferred directly to the city. At 0.83 euros per night and per person, it corresponds to the tax for the category of "non-classified furnished tourist accommodations" and includes city and departmental taxes.

The implementation of this tool follows the government's publication of a decree making it possible for platforms such as Airbnb to take charge of tourist stay tax collection on behalf of its hosts.
