The Brazilian metropolis Rio de Janeiro postpones the famous carnival due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
A new date will be set by the Association of Samba Schools based on the development of a vaccine.
In fact, Rio's carnival was to take take place in February. However, the president of the association, Jorge Castanheira states:
Given all this uncertainty, this instability (...) we have come to the conclusion that this event must be postponed.
After the United States and India, Brazil is the country with the highest number of infections (more than 4.5 million). More than 139,000 people have died in Brazil in connection with Covid-19. According to data provided by the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the city of Rio has officially registered nearly 100,000 infected people, and more than 10,000 patients have died so far.
