Micro weddings are on the rise at IHG Hotels & Resorts

With a smaller number of guests, micro-weddings help couples celebrate their love in times of pandemic. At InterContinental Hotels Group, these small, intimate gatherings are becoming more common.

These small two-hour wedding packages with 10 guests, time for photos, a champagne toast started in June and July 2020, according to Sharon Kilmartin the general manager of Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia in Georgia, USA.

This eventually became a one-day event with a ceremony, photos and a seated dinner for 10 or 15 people in a private dining room. Some couples chose to dine al fresco or brought in food trucks to feed their small wedding party and family members. These "Intimate Wedding" packages, according to the hotel manager, were a big hit.

These were couples who just wanted to be married. They didn't care that their wedding would change and look different. It was about being married and being together and not postponing that

This feeling was also felt on the other side of the Atlantic.

Since our micro-weddings package launched in September of 2020, we noticed a 50 percent increase in bookings

Couples and guests were happy to have the chance to celebrate their day with those who meant the most, and we were able to safely provide them with memories to last a lifetime..

Yet many couples put their weddings on hold in 2020 and are now ready to have the wedding of their dreams. Global data from IHG Hotels & Resorts shows that April 2021 saw more wedding opportunities created than April 2019. With bridal activity picking up, one wonders if couples will opt for a return to the big weddings of yesteryear or if micro weddings have cemented their place in the wedding business.

According to Sharon Kilmartin, general manager of Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia in Georgia, intimate weddings are here to stay.

People can do more with their budget. It's quality over quantity. Instead of spending money for a large space or a hundred guests, they can make the wedding about them and what they want.
