Vatel Concept Awards

Vatel ParisVatel Concept Awards, Ideas for Responsible and Sustainable Tourism

Summary _ Vatel, 1st Worldwide Business School Group in Hospitality &Tourism Management created the “Vatel Concept Awards” so its students would be able to invent tourism of the future while employing the many facets of sustainable development. This program was rolled out in 2009 during the Vatel International Convention and its guidelines were drawn up by our professors working hand-in-hand with the international Hospitality Industry professional leaders. _ The aim of this biennial contest is to allow the 30 different Vatel School’s students to develop the capacity to create sustainable development concepts by using what they have learned in their management courses: marketing, management, finance and human resources. Rules of this contest are then sent to each Vatel School. These rules are very precise: in a given context, students will be required to imagine a sustainable hotel and restaurant management concept which includes new technologies and hospitality trends and that can be implemented any place in the world. _ Each School puts together several teams. They carry out their analyses by using both internal resources and advice given by Hospitality leaders. They summarize their project in front of an examination board made up of professors who then nominate the two students who will be representing their School in the final international contest. The team taking part in the final contest fine-tunes their project with the assistance of School professors and fellow students. _ The day that the contest will be judged is a true multi-cultural experience: Vatel School finalists present their project to an examination board composed only of Hospitality specialists. They begin by defending and explaining their project to members of the examination board before presenting it orally for three minutes in front of an audience composed of journalists, hotel managers and Vatel School directors. _ In 2011, the winners of the Vatel Concept Awards were Matthieu Cavelius and Irene Fenart, students at the Vatel School in Paris who presented ESSENTIA, a project to transform abandoned villages into all-inclusive luxury resorts, while respecting the environment and using cutting-edge technology. This concept allows once abandoned traditional villages to come back to life again._ Please tell us why do you think you should win?_ “Vatel Concept Awards” is an exclusive Vatel concept and contest. Finalists come from North America, Central America, Asia, Europe and North Africa. Beyond its international and multi-cultural character, it drives students to meet with Hospitality Industry professionals in order to validate each stage of their project. _ Students put into practice what they have learned in the four key management subjects in order to invent and explain their “sustainable development” concept, an important global and cross-cultural concept. Thus, the students become more creative as they enhance their capacity to anticipate, synthesize and defend their projects.
