SWITZERLAND – bankable diplomas factory

Undeniably the preferred destination for students seeking careers in the hospitality industry, the Swiss Confederation of hotel schools continues to enjoy its exceptional reputation. This reputation has allowed it to continuously host students from all over the world for undergraduate programs in the hotel, hospitality and tourism management industries, and more, as well as masters programs, MBAs, and postgraduate diplomas. According to the latest figures, almost 70 % of all students at hospitality management schools in Switzerland are foreigners, with many schools hosting students of 90 or more different nationalities. This well-deserved reputation justifies the high tuition fees its students must pay. On average, an undergraduate program (typically 3-4 years with an internship of 12-18 months on average) will set students back about 110,000 CHF (96,000 euros), with top schools ranging from 60,000 CHF to 160,000 CHF (51,000 and 137,000 euros; see table on p.40). For more advanced diplomas or masters degrees these fees may be even higher.

While they may be high, it should be kept in mind that the fees include accommodations and meal plans, health insurance (mandatory in Switzerland), as well as registration fees. Furthermore, financial aid programs as well as scholarships are granted according to a student’s situation (grades and financial needs). Rates are slightly lower for Swiss students as well. Moreover, internships that run longer than 6 months in Switzerland are paid a local minimum wage of 2,172 CHF (around 2,000 euros) per month. As stated before, the average undergraduate student in Swiss hospitality management schools does 12-18 months of internships, so they can start seeing a return on their investment before they even graduate.
