2018 is a special year as it marks Hospitality ON’s 25th year. In 1994, I made a bet, to launch a magazine, in French and English, when the press was already in trouble. Heraclitus was right: "The only thing that is constant is change." Here are some of the highlights of our years together.
In 1990, MKG was already innovating by reporting on the impact of the First Gulf War on the economy of our sector. At that time, statistics were confidential or even non-existent. Our work has since been finetuned and the MKG databases have become unquestionable and indisputable both nationally and internationally.
It was obvious to me that I needed to share them with you and the best way to do that was with Hospitality ON.
In 1995, we published the world's first hotel ranking. How many things have changed since then and so much the better! The world's largest hotel group now exceeds 1,200,000 rooms... whereas 23 years ago, the American Hospitality Franchise System was number one with 413,891 rooms.
In 2001, we were conducting a survey on customer databases, at the time of the launch of CRM systems. Since then, CRM systems have come a long way, but I am still surprised at the difficulties hoteliers continue to face in harmonizing their management systems.
We also alerted hoteliers very early on to the power of consumers following the rise of online reviews on the web. Tell me what you like, I'll give you what you want. Guests are first and foremost looking for an experience and they want to be actively involved. For me it is essential; local solutions will be necessary to reinvent the servuction of tomorrow at your properties.
The subprime crisis, the pitfalls of yield management, the arrival of financiers, the relationship between franchisees and franchisors, have also been the subject of frequent analysis.
Very quickly, Hospitality ON felt that its mission was to open the doors to our many cousins in the sector. I also welcome the arrival of campsites, residences, cruise operators, and all the digital disruptors, it is a pleasure to welcome you into this great family of hospitality.
It is you – hoteliers, investors, suppliers, financiers, builders, designers – who are our raison d'être and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
In a word, Hospitality ON represents 25 years of the history of hospitality in France, Europe and worldwide. That is where our legitimacy comes from, it comes from you. Hospitality ON made it possible to create the Worldwide Hospitality Awards, TourInvest Forum, the Global Lodging Forum... three international events in Paris to bring us together, explore, prospect, develop and reward the great initiatives of our industry.
Almost 10,000 of you voted on our website to nominate candidates for the 2018 Worldwide Hospitality Awards and I thank you for that. We created this competition for hoteliers and with hoteliers. Hospitality ON's goal is to support you in the transformation of our profession and to enlighten you so that you can progress even more effectively.
