Having hosted 76 international congresses in 2016, Edinburgh is ranked by ICCA 27th worldwide destination and 18th European destination for international conferences. In particular, the city's airport will benefit from restructuring as part of a £40 million expansion project. By 2021, the airport will be better served and will be able to take advantage of the additional hangars.
Edinburgh is still today a destination of choice for moviegoers from all over the world, the city having served as setting for blockbusters such as Trainspotting, The Da Vinci Code and Cloud Atlas. More recently, Edinburgh has hosted the shooting of most of Avengers: Infinity War off-studio stages, and the municipality intends to develop film tourism.
After a decline in 2015, Edinburgh's hotel chain supply recorded double-digit growth in 2016, adding more than 1,000 rooms to the park. Although more moderately, growth continued in 2017 (+2.9%), enabling the Scottish capital's chain hotel portfolio to reach 10,366 rooms on 1 January 2018.
After London, Edinburgh has the highest average daily rates in the United Kingdom, mainly due to the presence of very high-end hotels, and higher prices than in other metropolises. After a slight slowdown in its growth in 2015 (+4% of RevPAR), Edinburgh had resumed a very sustained growth pace in 2016 (+9.3% of RevPAR), to accelerate to +11.5% of RevPAR in 2017. This good growth is mainly due to the average price which increased by 9.0%.
