Catalonia sanctions more than 500 illegal tourist accommodations

Authorities of the autonomous community have sanctioned more than 500 owners of illegal tourist accommodations that must pay a total of more than 2 million euros in fines.

In its inspection campaign of commercial accommodations, the Government of Catalonia examined the businesses of some 10,316 tourist accommodations in the region. The result was the launch of disciplinary procedures for 661 owners and managers of accommodations throughout the autonomous community, and a penalty for 502 of them. The latter were condemned to pay between 3,000 and  30,000 euros each, for a total of 2 million euros for the Catalan government.

The legislation adopted in Catalonia to have better control over commercial accommodations has three purposes: avoid disloyal competition, compete with an underground economy and guarantee the region has a supply of quality accommodations.

To fill them, authorities are also making use of online rental platforms. In 2015, 146 informative proceedings were initiated due to not posting the identification number in from the Catalan tourist office. 76 websites then adapted their contents at the request of the inspectors and 63 procedures are ongoing.
