Priceline Group, which already owns Kayak and booking.com, just made another new acquisition in the search engine sector, with the purchase of the Danish company Momondo and the British group Cheapflights, two companies that merged in 2011.

Concentration continues in online distribution around the three major global players Priceline Group, Expedia Inc. and Ctrip. After Kayak's acquisition by Priceline, the Trivago takeover by Expedia and most recently Ctrip's purchase of Skyscanner, Priceline reached into its pocket again to buy Momondo (Momondo + Cheapflights) for $550 million. This concentration movement is motivated by the desire to control research by the consumers who favor search engines and price comparison websites over online distributors.

Born and based in Denmark, Momondo is the main aerial meta-engine used in Scandinavia. The group, which was taken over by Cheapflights in 2011 and has a strong presence in the United Kingdom, merged the bases. Priceline intends to do the same thing by bringing together the databases of Kayak, Momondo and Cheapflights  in a single technological platform.

The two acquired brands are particularly active on the airfare comparison segment, but less present on the hotel price comparison segment, which is a Kayak strength. There is still a long way to go to catch up  Trivago's European leadership on the hospitality price comparison segment .
