The Criminal Court of Lecce in Italy has sentenced the owner of a company for publishing false reviews on TripAdvisor
The American site identified an illegal company in Italy, PromoSalento, which offered to write false notices for accommodations in order to improve their page on TripAdvisor. The company was blocked by the search and detection work of the website's teams and the police. In parallel, a restaurateur in Trieste had received promotional e-mails from PromoSalento and taken the case to the police.
The Criminal Court of Lecce found the owner of PromoSalento guilty of criminal conduct based on the use of a false identity to commit fraud. He was sentenced to 9 months in prison and to pay approximately €8,000 in damages and costs.
The American company remarks that it has shut down more than 60 paid notification firms worldwide.
