Wyndham Hotels & Resorts has just announced its development strategy for the APAC region. A look at this strong pipeline including several openings in 2019.

Since the end of 2018, the group's activities have been divided between hotel operations and timeshare with the entities Wyndham Destination Network and Wyndham Vacation Ownership. Today, the group is stepping further away from this activity with the sale of Wyndham Vacation Rentals to Vacasa for some USD 162 million .

In other words, Wyndham is stepping away from seasonal rentals to concentrate on the hotel sector.

Fueled by this desire, its growth strategy is developing, with a focus on the APAC (Asia-Pacific) region. The forecast for 86 openings in the region this year provides an overview of the strong pipeline that will feed China to the Pacific Ocean and Southeast Asia. It should be noted that all these new properties will be combined in a single loyalty program, Wyndham Rewards, regardless of the brand.

Emphasis on China

After buying back its franchise rights for its brand Days Inn in the Middle Empire, the group continues to grow its presence on this market through more than 500 new hotels forecast in the next three years. The group currently has more than 1,500 properties (149K rooms) in the country, according to their source.

Two Ramada® hotels have already opened:

  • Ramada by Wyndham Hong Kong Harbour View (January 2019): 432 rooms.
  • Ramada by Wyndham Hong Kong Grand View (May 2019): 317 rooms, rooftop swimming pool.

And seven Days Inn by Wyndham properties opened this year from Chongqing to Guangzhou to Changsha.

Leo Liu, Leo Liu, President of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Greater China, said:

We have sustained our strong growth momentum and delivered robust hotel opening and net rooms growth figures in China. Working closely with owners and developers in the region, we are striving to further expand our presence across Greater China, especially in Hong Kong and in the northern and southwestern parts of China, where there is rapid growth and strong potential for further expansion of our footprint.

Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim also invested

22% growth for the group could be observed in this region in the second quarter. The group announced that it has a portfolio of 24,000 rooms there. Joon Aun Ooi, President and Managing Director Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, SEAPR, explains the reasons de l’engagement sur cette région :

This is a hugely exciting region, where dynamic economies, rising affluence and strong intra-regional travel is creating exceptional conditions for growth. These trends give Wyndham plenty of scope for expansion, both in established and emerging markets.

Wyndham Hotels has already opened several units there this year, meaning:

  • Days Hotel & Suites by Wyndham Hamilton, New Zealand (January 2019): 69 rooms.
  • Wyndham Grand Yangon, Myanmar (January 2019): 291 rooms.
