The year 2015 should likely go down in history for Marriott International, after announcing the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts and signing close to 100,000 hotel rooms.
Marriott International's portfolio should keep growing in 2016. The upscale brand Autograph Collection now comprises 95 hotels across four continents, and openings have been announced this year in Seoul and Key Largo, off the coast of Florida. AC by Marriott encompasses more than 80 hotels and will soon have a new address in Guadalajara, whereas New Orleans and Berlin are Moxy Hotels' next destinations. In the luxury boutique segment, Edition will open its next hotel in Bangkok in 2016. Last but not least, the opening of the Renaissance Paris Republique is scheduled for April.
Marriott International's acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts was certainly last years' most significant operation in the hospitality industry. Ranked 3rd and 7th hotel groups before the merger in terms of number of rooms according to data published by MKG Consulting, the new group takes the lead in worldwide rankings, representing more than a million rooms - including 800,000 units in the upscale segment alone.
