InterContinental Hotel Group will develop 46 hotels in Eastern Europe over the next 3 to 5 years. The group will be primarily driven by its brand Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

IHG is pursuing its growth strategy in Eastern European countries. In this geographic area, the hotel group has 46 units in its pipeline that are due to open in the next five years. Moreover, four properties have recently opened or will soon open their doors to guests:

  • Hotel Indigo Old Town, Cracow (56 rooms) which opened this month.
  • Holiday Inn Dabrowa Gornicza (160 rooms) in Poland, opened on last August.
  • Staybridge Suites Baku (160 rooms) in Azerbaijan should soon open its doors.
  • Holiday Inn Plovdiv (67 rooms) in Bulgaria will open on October.

Robert Shepherd, Chief Development Officer, Europe, IHG, said: "The success of our strategy in Eastern Europe has been fueled by growing domestic travel, tourism from visa free countries including China, South Korea, India; as well as a sustainable level of demand from our customers in Western Europe that are attracted by new travel experiences and low costs. Our outlook for the region is long-term. We are acting in order to ensure we provide options from across our brand portfolio to meet the demand from a range of consumer needs."

As of January 2016, IHG ranked 3rd hotel group worldwide in terms of number of rooms according to data published by Hospitality ON. At the time, its portfolio included 5,032 hotels totaling 744,368 rooms worldwide.
