Authorities of the Catalan city announced the end of the freeze on new hotel licenses for 18 hotel projects in Barcelona.

Construction and renovation works will be able to begin again for nearly half of the hotel projects that had been blocked by Barcelona's moratorium that began last July 2. According to an announcement by Janet Sanz, vice-mayor of Ecology, Urbanism and Mobility, the Catalan capital's authorities have decided to lift the freeze on hotel licenses for 18 properties. These are hotels that are under development that were at advanced construction stages before the implementation of the moratorium. Moreover, the city of Barcelona gave itself two months maximum to study the 20 other hotel projects waiting for building permits .

The decision for the gel on the attribution of new hotel licenses was taken by the recently elected mayor, Ada Colau, to regulate tourist arrivals in the city ville and do away with its image of mass tourism. "This is a temporary decision that will last one year, the time it takes to elaborate a strategic project in terms of tourist accommodations," at that time Ada Colau, specified that she was aware that "tourism is one of the city's primary assets, and thus it is our responsibility as a group to take care of it and make it as sustainable as possible."
