The world's leading hotel group maintained growth in 2020 with +3.1% in rooms, equivalent to 41,889 new keys internationally, passing the symbolic stage of 1.4 million rooms across nearly 7,500 properties. This new growth comes against the context of the global coronavirus pandemic, to which was added the death of the iconic CEO of the American group Arne Sorenson, in February 2021 following a cancer that did not prevent him from being active during the crisis.
Despite the health crisis, Marriott has kept 94% of its hotels open. However, according to group data, net profit in the third quarter of 2020 fell to $ 100 million (84 million euros) compared to $ 387 million (325.7 million euros) last year at the same period.
No fewer than 399 new properties opened in 2020 worldwide under the global leader, representing a volume of 62,776 rooms. Approximately 45% of these are located in the United States or Canada, which highlights the focus on a stronger local offering by the global hotel leader.
The Asia-Pacific region continued to expand with nearly 27,000 rooms added to the region's development pipeline in 2020. Growth will continue as Marriott plans to open 100 hotels in the region in 2021, fulfilling a long-term growth strategy for Asia-Pacific.
