Mövenpick signs its first hotel in Ethiopia

The Swiss hotel group Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is developing its first hotel in Ethiopia, near the capital: Addis-Ababa. Its opening is scheduled for the end of 2019.

The Swiss operator is developing its first unit in the country near Bole International Airport, the main airport serving the Ethiopian capital. The Mövenpick Addis-Ababa is a 252-room property that will offer a ballroom able to welcome up to 460 people and an event space of 2,300 sqm with a capacity of 1,200. It will also have modular meeting rooms of 600 sqm, several restaurants, a bar, a fitness center, a spa and a swimming pool. This operation follows the group’s growth strategy in Africa. In 2016, Mövenpick announced the opening of the Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech (503 rooms) and the development of units in Tunisia, Kenya, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts currently operates 25 properties in Africa and has a pipeline of five hotels currently under development. As of January 1, 2016, the brand ranked 55th largest hotel operator worldwide, with 77 properties and 19,350 rooms, according to data published by Hospitality ON.
