IHG signs Crowne Plaza for Colombia

The hotel group will open a third Crowne Plaza hotel in the city of Medellin in 2018.

InterContinenral Hotels Group announced the signature of a partnership for a new-build property in Latin America. The hotel group launched the construction of the Crowne Plaza Medellin, in a partnership with the property's owner, Grupo Contempo SAS. Scheduled to open in 2018, the Crowne Plaza Medellin will have 199 rooms, a restaurant, a bar, a reception area, ballroom and meeting spaces.

The development of the new property further expands the collaboration between the group InterContinental and Grupo Contempo, which owns Holiday Inn Express in Bogotá. The two players plan to open other properties in Colombia, such as Holiday Inn Express hotels in the financial district of Bogotá, in Cartagena and Barranquilla.

IHG thus solidifies its presence in Latin America, where it already operates 88 hotels and has a pipeline of 27 other properties, including eight in Colombia in the cities of Barranquilla, Cartagena, Bogotá, Cucuta and Yopal.

On January 1, 2014, InterContinental Hotels Group was number one worldwide in terms of  number of rooms, according to the ranking produced each year by MKG Hospitality, hospitality consulting firm founded by Georges Panayotis. It had 4,697 hotels and 686,873 worldwide. (Read our report)
