Holiday Inn Express opens its biggest European hotel in Cologne

InterContinental Hotels Group announced the opening of a new Holiday Inn Express in Cologne for the beginning of 2017. This will be the brand's third property after those located in Muelheim and Troisdorf, near the airport.

Holiday Inn Express is taking a stand in Cologne's landscape within an 18-storey building. It will be the brand's tallest property within the group InterContinental in Europe. Currently undergoing works, the building previously belonged to the insurance company Gothaer Versicherung, prior to being bought by the real estate developer GBI AG last year. The latter signed a 25-year sale and lease back contract with Foremost Hospitality, a longterm partner of IHG in Germany, where it manages twenty or so properties under the group's different brands.

The architect Gernot Nalbach will be working on the project. His agency produced the Motel One Berlin Hauptbahnhof. He will work in collaboration with the Design Committee of the City of Cologne which produces the front elevation. Scheduled to open in 2017, the Holiday Inn Express has 323 rooms and two F&B concepts: the Express Cafe & Bar and an improved fast food concept.

On January 1, 2015, InterContinental Hotels Group was the second biggest European hotel group in terms of number of rooms with 90,160 units in 589 properties according to MKG Hospitality, consulting firm founded by Georges Panayotis. (Read our report)
