Carlson Rezidor accelerating growth strategy in Africa

The group portfolio has been expanding at a fast pace across African markets, as the continent appears to be at the center of its development strategy. Carlson Rezidor now operates properties in close to 30 countries in the region.

Carlson Rezidor is accelerating its development across African markets, especially through its Radisson Blu brand. In the first six months of 2016, five properties joined the brand portfolio in Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, and Togo. The group also signed the first African address of Quorvus Collection in Lagos, the largest city on the continent. The new property will offer 244 rooms in Nigeria's capital.

Speaking at the opening of the Africa Hotel Investment Forum, Wolfgang M. Neumann, President and CEO of The Rezidor Hotel Group said, “Africa is Rezidor’s biggest growth market. Our group’s total portfolio comprises 69 hotels in 28 countries, with over 15,000 rooms in operation or under development. Radisson Blu leads the way with more hotel rooms under development than any of the other 85+ hotel brands active in Africa today. Our ambition is to be the leading player in the travel and tourism sector across the continent.”

Rezidor’s Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer, Elie Younes added: “The African continent is a powerhouse of exponential growth of the hotel industry. Rapid urbanization and economic growth, combined with favorable demographics, has resulted in a shortage of quality internationally branded hotels. This means there are huge opportunities for sustainable and quality growth for world-class international hotel operators like Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group.”

The group portfolio comprises 498 units in operation and/or under development in Europe, the Middle-East and Africa, including 309 Radisson Blu hotels and 151 Park Inn by Radisson properties. In Africa alone, Carlson Rezidor operates and develops 69 properties across 28 African markets. Chinese group HNA recently acquired the operator: the newly-formed group ranked as the 11th hotel operator worldwide in terms of rooms as of January 2016. According to data published by Hospitality ON, HNA Group and Carlson Rezidor operate 1,145 hotels totalling 182,521 rooms.
