Brazil: the hoteliers’ kick-off

This Thursday is the opportunity to watch the first game one of the most awaited for sports events that happens every 4 years. The FiFA World Cup is being held in Brazil this year and should be a boon for hoteliers at the destination whose supply grew strongly in recent years.

The kick-off for the football event of the year is today and the games will continue until July 13, 2014. Brazil is thus the center of attention and hoteliers are ready to welcome some 600,000 foreign tourists and three million Brazilians who are expected to travel for the occasion. The room supply has been increased in recent years. At the beginning of the event, there are able to offer more than 10,000 hotels and more than 500,000 rooms to meet the increased demand in the twelve towns where the matches will be held (according to Embratur, the Brazilian Tourism Board).

In order to achieve these figures, Brazil had to grow its supply by creating 173,000 new beds in the regions hosting the World Cup. The twelve cities concerned are Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo.

In terms of windfall, a study by Embratur shows that Brazilian and foreign tourists should spend some 8.2 billion euros During the World Cup, representing more than the total amount of investments made by the federal government (close to 7.4 billion euros).

With this increase in its accommodations supply, the country plans to extend the benefits, in particular by hosting the Olympics in Rio in 2016.
