Oasis Eco Resort: a sustainable hotel concept in the desert

Eco Resort Dubai partnered with London-based studio Baharash Architecture to design a new hotel concept: a sustainable complex in the middle of the desert, in the southern United Arab Emirates.

This new hotel project aims to offer an upscale yet sustainable service in an oasis on the edge of the Rub' al Khali desert. South of Abu Dhabi, the site has recently hit the headlines as one of the filming locations of the last Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. In order to reach these objectives, the hotel will be paying close attention to several elements: water resource management (recycled and limited extraction), waste management and disposal, electricity generation (with solar panels covering 14,500m² on the rooftop and triple-glazed windows), and local food initiatives to supply its F&B outlets. Cost of the project: 80 million UAE dirhams, the equivalent of 20 million euros.

Shaped like a 8,430m²-star, the complex is located above a natural spring, an element that strongly contributed to the genesis of the project. It will have 84 connected suites, a restaurant and bar, a research and innovation center, and a fitness center including a spa. The project also aims to hire local workers and to foster the diversification of the regional economy. After receiving several awards for its sustainable architectural projects, Baharash Architecture keeps experimenting new designs in the field of sustainable hospitality. The studio already conceived a solar-powered hotel in Dubai and a similarly-supplied private residence in the desert.
