Plans for a US$3 billion MGM Resorts International entertainment complex in Abu Dhabi's Mina Zayed are under review, placing the project’s future in question.
The waterfront resort is to include hotels, with a 1,000-key nongaming MGM Grand property as the centerpiece, along with an indoor arena and a convention center.MGM Resorts has declined to comment on the future of the project. The project, which has been stalled since 2008, is being spearheaded by MGM Resorts and Mubadala Development, a strategic investment company owned by the Abu Dhabi government. Construction work was scheduled to start in 2009, with phase one of the master plan due to open next year."The project is still being reviewed," Mubadala says in a statement. "Any material developments will be announced in due course." The review reportedly centers on whether the development is still viable in the wake of the global financial crisis; many analysts believe the United Arab Emirates already has more hotel inventory than it needs.MGM Resorts has declined to comment on the future of the project.
