MGM has submitted a $400,000 fee that will fund the official vetting and negotiating process, as part of its bid to obtain permission to build a new hotel and casino complex in western Massachusetts.
MGM Resorts International has announced plans to develop an $800-million gambling, hotel and entertainment project in Springfield, Massachusetts, but could face competition from at least five other operators who also wish to develop in the area. The State legalised gambling last year, setting a limit of three casinos in three regions. Since then, casino operators have been seeking development rights in these, Springfield being the most sought-after location. The city will have to select one of the competing developers, which as well as MGM include Ameristar Casinos, Penn National Gaming, Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority and Seminole Hard Rock Entertainment.“I have instructed our city departments and our consultants to conduct an open, fair, and robust competitive process that will allow me to choose that project or projects that best meet the city’s selection criteria,” said Springfield’s Mayor Domenic J. Sarno in a statement outlining the city’s process for evaluating casino proposals. The winning project will be that which is deemed most beneficial to the area in terms of employment creation, tourism, and economic development.
