The InterContinental group signed an agreement with Makkah Real Estate Company for the development of a new hotel under the Holiday Inn brand in the city of Mecca. With no less than 1,238 rooms, the hotel will be the brand's largest in the world and should be opening its doors by 2016. This development agreement coincides with the success of Saudi Arabia on the religious tourism market. About 3 million pilgrims went to the destination in 2012, 8% more than the preceding year, and this figure is expected to reach 15.8 million by 2014.
