Budget design hotel Motel One is to open its first UK property

A £25m investment in Edinburgh will herald the chain’s move into the UK following the establishment of 32 properties in Germany, the brand’s home country, and two in Austria.Motel One has been attracted to the UK following the success of brands such as Travelodge in filling the gap in the budget hotel market. The properties have a trademark One Lounge, which serves as lobby, breakfast area and bar. The One Lounge has free wi-fi access and is open 24 hours.Motel One is a two-star category brand with rooms priced from €49, but it adds designer flourishes to the décor of its properties despite the low lead-in price. The Edinburgh hotel will comprise 208 bedrooms in a listed former local government building on Market Street on the edge of the Royal Mile.The site, which will also include homes and offices, will take three years to complete. Anne MacColl, chAief executive officer, Scottish Development International said: ‘UK hotels continue to be the most occupied in Europe, with Edinburgh showing the highest occupancy in the UK outside of London.’Motel One has been attracted to the UK following the success of brands such as Travelodge in filling the gap in the budget hotel market.
