Drury Hotels, a family-owned hotel group known for budget hotels, was the high bidder for the Cleveland Board of Education Building for $4.5 million US.
The acquisition of the former administration building marks Drury Hotels’ evolution since the 1980s, when it began opening hotels in historic buildings, in a change of direction from its position as a budget brand. The hotel group intends to convert the $4.5 million US building into a Drury Plaza with roughly 180 rooms in downtown Cleveland. Cleveland's school board should sign off on the deal next month, after which Drury aims to undertake construction for opening in late 2015.
