Authorities in Bali are considering a moratorium on the development of new hotels on the island. The Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) has announced its support for the move.
The temporary ban on hotel development would have the aim of protecting the Indonesian island’s local agriculture and traditional Subak irrigation system, under threat by tourist activity and in particular the construction of new tourist facilities on Subak paddy fields. The PHRI expressed its support for the moratorium saying the move would not only protect Bali’s natural environment and culture, but also tighten competition and deal with the problem of excessive supply of hotels rooms, which often leads to “unhealthy competition.” Tighter regulations for existing hotels have also been proposed.
