Innovation : Bathroom and Spa, the quest for wellness

The bathroom is an important component of hotel rooms and plays an essential role in customer satisfaction. As the amount of time spent in these spaces continues to grow and the wellness concept gains ground, hoteliers must ensure their customers’ comfort while respecting the current constraints of sustainable development. In order to do so, several innovative solutions have been developed and are currently available to professionals.

Over the years the amount of time people spend in the bathroom has gradually grown. These spaces are thus no longer simply associated with their simple function of hygiene and are opening up more to the notion of wellness. In order to meet their users’ expectations, showers and bathtubs are getting bigger and are adopting more ergonomic and more comfortable forms.

In addition, confort innovations are also important and solutions have been developed to make the space more pleasant. DVT Prompt from Jacob Delafon, for example, is a thermostatic unit with a digital interface that makes it possible to set the desired water temperature running into the showerhead or hydro massage jets. In another style, Skinjay adapts the coffee capsule concept to the shower. Its patented micro-nebulization mixer can be adapted to any shower system and makes it possible to insert cosmetic capsules to release essential oils, fragrances and bodycare products directly into the shower water. The shower experience thus becomes a veritable moment of relaxation and pleasure.

To take the notion of comfort further, bathrooms are also connecting to entertainment. The Aquavolo shower from Bossini has a built-in audio system adapted to any type of music playing device that runs water with music and comes complete with two speakers. Connected mirrors are also increasingly installed in these once isolated spaces to bring in the outside world. Guests may consult the news, social networks, the weather and traffic while preparing to leave their room. The company Posh View, for example, offers the iMirror concept that is a connected mirror with a tactile interface.

While not all hotels have a specific spa space, spa devices are now becoming integral to bathrooms. Whirlpool baths, saunas, hydro-massage jets as well as massage tables are increasingly common in hotel rooms. The latest innovations in this area include the Horizontal Shower, a shower that lets its user lie down under a horizontal range of six showerheads. It can be programmed for different experiences via the command panel.

Adapted decoration

Small damp rooms are gone, today the bathroom must be a pleasant and attractive space to encourage the sensation of wellness. Decoration and esthetics in these spaces have become another area for innovation. The goal is to develop new materials to produce ever more surprising effects and more practical and ergonomic installations in rooms. A new material called LG Hi-Macs was thus developed to improve the appearance of sinks and bathtubs. It is made of an acrylic resin blended with natural minerals to create a perfectly smooth appearance for the final molded product.

Lighting is another component of hotel bathroom esthetics. In response to today’s sustainable growth issue, LED technology has entered every part of the room, right down to the showers and bathrooms. The manufacturer Glassolutions has thus developed a new generation of illuminated LED shower screens, and its Inspiration range offers a pleasant source of light along with a graphic effect. LED strips are integrated into the profile of the glass. Light travels through the glass to obtain homogeneous lighting without a glare. Inspiration is EN 14428 certified for tempered glass shower screens and humid environments.

Water savings, a challenge for sustainable development in bathrooms

With water being considered the blue gold of this era, sustainable development naturally wends its way into the bathroom where it has become an environmental and economic necessity for hotels. In order to better optimize Water and energy consumption, several solutions have been developed in recent years, such as regulating water flow from faucets and avoiding useless waste. Among them, the Connect Blue faucet from Ideal Standard can set the temperature and limit water flow. RVB also has its new technology named Tune, a new faucet system that has an interface to economically manage water. The use of intelligent mirrors as an atmospheric management tool for the room is another alternative for controlling water flow and temperature as well as managing the room’s temperature. As far as concerns bathroom heating, Campa has developed its economic and connected Campaver Bains Select Smart ECOcontrol 3.0 radiators. They are at the core of the system and can interact with one another and the user: if the window is open or the room is unoccupied, they opt for the “eco adapted” solution.

Finally, sustainable development also concerns WCs. Villeroy & Boch has come up with Omnia GreenGain WCs that use just 3.5 liters per flush. The brand also offers professionals the DirectFlush solution that rinses perfectly, consuming between 3 and 4.5 liters of water. Rather than having a classic rim, DirectFlush WCs have a system that intelligently directs water flow as well as a special splash guard on the upper edge of the bowl, guaranteeing full rinsing of the bowl with no splashing. While traditional WCs have a closed narrow rim that is not visible or accessible without tools, the fully enameled open rim of the DirectFlush WC allows for quick and easy hygienic maintenance of WC bowls.

Innovation at the service of wellness at spas

While the aforementioned innovations are mostly adaptable to the spa universe, others have nonetheless been developed exclusively for spaces dedicated to peace and relaxation. To fully benefit from these peaceful moments in the company of others, Jacuzzi developed a product called Enjoy, a six-seated hot tub created for professional use. Designed for intensive use and studied for hotels, fitness centers and wellness centers, Enjoy is easy to install and has an efficient water maintenance system, and is available as a built-in tub with an overflow grate. Also in the whirlpool bath area, the 12 FX Swim Spa by Clairazur has some of the most recent technological innovations in terms of filtration, insulation and wellness. The new model has just joined the range of acrylic swim spas by Clair Azur with a small and high-performing polyvalent model. This tub has 3 massage seats and powerful swimming jets.
