Our decade has been described as the Turbulent Teens. In reaction to uncertain economic dynamics, unparalleled original solutions in the space of art and design have cropped up, one of the most popular being the pop-up retail and art phenomenon. While this concept has been around for a while, Design Hotels™ Founder and CEO Claus Sendlinger saw its shift to hospitality as a natural and inevitable progression.
Summary __ Consequently, Papaya Playa, a Design Hotels™ project hit Tulum, Mexico from December 6, 2011 to May 5, 2012. Together with a group of like-minded partners, Design Hotels™ staged a communal playground, offering a raw, white canvas for a community seeking reconnection with nature and within themselves._ Papaya Playa was a raw-luxe camp with an urban spirit. Created with a clearly defined creative crowd in mind, it offered a uniquely tribal experience – communal, participatory and by definition transitory – for the adventurous traveler seeking an experience that allows them to connect with nature and with likeminded people._ Papaya Playa is strongly connected to its neighborhood and deeply involved in transforming Tulum into a sustainable destination of responsible tourists and tourism providers, where business owners play an active role in urban planning and cultural conservation._ In the future, the project will evolve into a self-sustaining ecological resort thanks to the help of grassroots green heroes, Finding Infinity. With the community being a core aspect of the vision, the project will also work with local schools in redevelopment programs and act as a beacon for the region’s sustainability fight._ This innovative approach is evolving into a permanent feature in the Design Hotels™ portfolio. A second Design Hotels™ project, San Giorgio Mykonos, is operating during the summer of 2012 in Greece, a third one will be welcoming guests at a destination in the Alps in the winter of the same year._ Why we should win_ Papaya Playa unites a number of innovative aspects, making it a groundbreaking concept for both Design Hotels™ and the hospitality industry at large: (1) It is the first concept to successfully transfer the pop-up phenomenon from retail, art and gastronomy to hospitality. (2) As a raw-luxe camp with an urban spirit it presents a concept perfectly suited for uncertain times and an creative, urban target group. (3) It was conceived with the mission to achieve strong local integration and to build and support a community greater than its own. (4) It employs a long-term sustainability strategy and will evolve into a self-sustaining ecological resort in the future. (5) It is the blue print for other projects of future projects in “temporal hospitality” for Design Hotels™.
