Marriott International teams up with Alibaba to test a project to set up facial recognition check-in services in response to interests of tech-savvy Chinese travelers.
Marriott International, with Alibaba’s travel services platform (Fliggy) have announced a project to set up facial recognition for check-in.
This announcement comes after the joint venture’s recent global rollout of the Post Post Pay (PPP) functionality and redesigned storefront on Fliggy.
Chinese travelers must scan their IDs, take a photo and input contact details on a self-help machine. The intelligent device will then provide room key cards after verifying identities and booking information. With facial recognition technology, the check-in process can be completed in less than a minute.
The initiative is scheduled to be implemented in two Marriott hotels in China from July: Hangzhou Marriott Hotel Qianjiang and Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay. The firms plan to develop the process throughout Marriott International’s properties worldwide in the future.
