Founded by James R. Trueman, Red Roof began developing in the United States in 1973, when it opened its first Red Roof Inn in Columbus, Ohio, priced at $8.5 a night. In 1994, the brand was acquired by the Morgan Stanley investment fund, before being acquired by the Accor group in 1999. Red Roof regained its autonomy following its sale by the French to Citygroup and Westbridge Hospitality in 2010.

An extension of the original brand, Red Roof Plus, was launched in 2014. The following year, the group initiated its international expansion by signing up hotels in Canada and Brazil and then in Japan in 2016. Today, the group's portfolio includes more than 500 hotels under the Red Roof Inn and Red Roof Plus banner.

With 54,146 rooms, it is the 23rd largest operator in the world in 2017. It should be noted that with double-digit supply growth between 2016 and 2017, it is one of the fastest growing North American groups in the past year.
