Established in 1958, the Japanese group was able to make a name for itself in the international hotel scene from the very beginning: only a few years after the opening of its first establishment in Tokyo in 1962, the group opened a hotel in the city of Amsterdam. The Okura hotel chain was founded in 1974 and is expanding throughout Asia, particularly in Kobe in 1989 and Shanghai in 1990. It was renamed Okura Hotels and Resorts in 1998.
In 2001, the Japanese group restructured: Hotel Okura established itself as a holding company with numerous business operations in the hotel and related industries, such as asset ownership, management, technical assistance and consulting. As part of its development, it has also made several marketing alliances, notably with the Singapore-based group Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts (2006), the Indian chain Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces (2007) and the Japanese Rihga Royal Hotel (2008).
Okura Hotel Group expanded significantly in 2010 with the acquisition from Japan Airline of 79.6% of the shares of the operator JAL Hotels, which became a subsidiary of the group. Through this operation, it acquired two new brands: JAL City, for business customers, and the high-end chain Hotel Nikko. It now manages a portfolio of 74 establishments, comprising 28,622 rooms in Japan, China, Macao, Taiwan, Thailand, the Netherlands, the United States and Thailand. On the 1st of January 2017, Okura Hotel ranked 48th hotel group and 3rd Japanese operator in the world ranking.
