Key figures
The MGM Resorts group's beginnings date back to the late 1960s when Kirk Kerkorian, then owner of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio, decided to enter the gaming and hospitality industry. In 1962 he built the International Hotel in Las Vegas, the largest hotel-casino at that time, then the MGM Grand Hotel 4 years later and the MGM Grand Reno in 1978. The "MGM Grand" company began operations in 1987, following the sale of resorts to Bally Manufacturing. During the 1990s, the company developed casinos and hotels, first in Las Vegas in 1993 and then in New York in 1997. It also extended internationally, notably in Australia and South Africa.
In 2000, MGM Grand acquired the hotel and casino operator Mirage Resort, and was renamed MGM Mirage. In 2005, the group acquired the Mandalay Resort Group and became interested in various growing gaming destinations, including Macao in China. It also unveiled the development of CityCenter (now Aria Resort & Casino), a large-scale urban complex project in Las Vegas. Its construction was partly financed by Dubai World, an investment trust, and the resort is now 50% owned by MGM.
To better reflect its global expansion strategy, the company was renamed MGM Resorts International in 2010. As of 2017, its portfolio includes 23 properties for a total of 51,209 rooms, including hotels and casinos in the United States, notably in Las Vegas, Reno and Detroit, but also in several international destinations such as Darwin Australia or more recently Macao and Shanghai.
The group is the world's 24th largest hotel operator and operates world-renowned resorts & casinos under the Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay and The Mirage banners. After opening a unit in Maryland (National Harbor) at the end of 2016, the group is planning new openings in Springfield, Massachusetts, and Macao (Cotai).
