La Quinta is a major owner, operator and franchisor of select-service hotels founded by Real estate tycoon Sam Barshop and his brother Phil as they opened the first La Quinta hotel in San Antonio, Texas, in 1968. The company expanded and in 1999 moved its headquarters to Dallas (Irving), Texas.
Private equity giant Blackstone acquired the company in 2006 for more than $3 billion. Although the company has been listed on New York's Nasdaq since its 2014 IPO, Blackstone remains a key shareholder of the group. In 2017, it announced plans to split its operations and real estate divisons, spinning off its owned real estate into a separate REIT.
As of 2017, the Company’s owned and franchised portfolio gathers more than 885 units and 87,500 rooms located mainly in the United States, although the group is also present in Canada, Mexico and Honduras. Hotels operate under the La Quinta Inn & Suites™, La Quinta Inn™ and LQ Hotel™ brands.
