Huazhu Hotels Group, formerly China Lodging Group, was founded in 2005 by entrepreneur Ji Qi. Exclusively established in Asia, even if listed on the New York Nasdaq, the group operates hotels under its upscale (Joya Hotel, Manxin Hotels & Resorts), midscale (Ji Hotel and Starway Hotel) and economy (HanTing Hotel, Elan Hotel, and Hi Inn) banners.
In 2014, Huazhu joined forces with AccorHotels through a strategic partnership to develop the French group's midscale and economy brands in Greater China. Under the terms of this agreement, Huazhu, which now holds an exclusive master franchise for AccorHotels, is responsible for the operation and development of the ibis, ibis Styles, Novotel, Mercure and Grand Mercure brands in China, Taiwan and Mongolia.
In addition to strong organic growth, Huazhu continued its development in early 2017 with the acquisition of the Chinese operator Crystal Orange Hotel, which operates 100 properties in China, for RMB 3.65 billion (€480 million).
These dynamics have enabled Huazhu to become the world's ninth largest hotel group, with a portfolio of 3,169 hotels for 314,788 rooms as of January 1, 2017.
