The first Motel 6, a budget accommodation concept, was launched in 1962 in Santa Barbara, California. The brand developed rapidly during the 1970s and early 1980s, before being taken over by the private equity fund KKR.
In 1990, it became a subsidiary of the French Accor group and continued to develop its franchise business. Eight years later, it launched its brand dedicated to extended stays, Studio 6. The early 2000s marked the beginning of Motel 6's expansion outside the United States: the chain opened its first unit in Canada. The takeover of the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands by the American investor Blackstone in October 2012 marks the birth of the new G6 Hospitality group. Two years later, it introduced two new brands for the Latin American market: Estudio 6 and Hotel 6. The first Hotel 6 unit is scheduled to open at the end of 2017.
