In September 2016, MassMutual merged Babson Capital Management, Wood Creek Capital Management, Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers, and Baring Asset Management to form Barings.

Barings accomplished its first hotel transaction in Europe in August 2017 when it acquired an office building at Helsinki for €16,3 million. Barings planned to convert it into a 120 room business class hotel.
In March 2018, Barings provided a €184,8 million loan secured against Hotel Café Royal, the iconic 150-year old five-star luxury hotel in London’s West End.
According to Barings, the group is on track to grow its platform in Europe with strategic acquisitions of existing hotels and conversion opportunities in market.
