Meliá Hotels International seeks to involve its customers in its fight against climate change. Through the application of Blockchain technology, customers will be able to support environmental projects certified under international standards.
The planet we love, is a project that Meliá has been working on in recent months with Climatetrade, in which customers of the MeliáRewards loyalty program will be able to exchange their points for carbon credits certified by the United Nations, with which they can support a selection of projects in developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
MeliáRewards members who wish participate in this initiative can directly do it from their account, where they will be able to choose between two projects selected by the company. The first, in Brazil, is a project to reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere and transform them into non-polluting domestic energy for thousands of at-risk households. The second, endorsed by AENOR and developed by Acciona, aims to promote new water and sustainable energy infrastructures to benefit more than 700,000 homes in Mexico, avoiding the emission of more than 670,000 tons of CO2, equivalent to the photosynthesis carried out by 33 million trees.
To develop this initiative, Meliá has collaborated with Climatetrade, a Spanish fintech, whose objective is to help companies achieve carbon neutrality by offsetting their emissions with a large number of verified environmental projects, applying blockchain technology to ensure transparency and traceability of the entire process.
