Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (Ville)

The Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley, located in Upper Savoy, in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region welcomes nearly 2.5 million visitors every year. Geneva airport is within an hour's drive of the station and railway lines link it to the French, Italian, Swiss and German markets.

The cultural and sporting life of Chamonix is punctuated by a diversified calendar of events. The resort offers a wide range of sports competitions based on its natural asset, Mont Blanc, with the Mont Blanc marathon (usually in June), the Mont Blanc ultratrail or the Climbing World Cup (usually in July). The resort also offers cultural events and music festivals, including the Cosmo Jazz Festival Chamonix at the end of July.

The proportion of French and international visitors is balanced: 48% of clientele is French and 52% is foreign in 2015. The majority of the latter comes from the United Kingdom (26% of foreign overnight stays in 2015), Switzerland (11%) and Belgium (9%). The majority of French visitors come with family (56%) and friends (20%) and have an average budget of 1,793 euros for a stay in winter (for a 3.4-person home). According to the Savoie Mont Blanc Tourism Observatory, the average length of stay for travelers was 2.2 nights in 2015. The destination is evolving towards more business tourism. This mountain town has a congress center with 9 rooms for 15 to 400 people, and 20 of the 50 classified properties in the destination are equipped to organize seminars.

The Chamonix hotel park has nearly 2,000 rooms. Most of this offer is positioned in the high-end segment: 1,101 rooms are rated 4 and 5 stars. More generally, the resort has 15,715 commercial beds, including 2,150 beds in a tourist residence and 2,438 in a holiday center and village or youth hostel, and 42,233 non-commercial beds. In 2016, Chamonix registered a RevPAR (income per available room) up 15.9% compared to 2015. This performance was due to an occupancy rate up by 6.2 points and an average price up 7.2%, according to data from the MKG Consulting / OlaKala_Destinations Observatory. The occupancy rate averages 63% in winter and 65% in summer.
