Cendant is widely tipped to be on the verge of making a euro1bn cash offer for US consumer- facing web site Orbitz. Several financial newspapers have indicated that the two boards of directors were in talks. Orbitz was founded by several airlines as a response to the increasing power of third parties travel web sites such as Expedia or Lastminute. American and United each own 16.7% of Orbitz, while Delta owns 12.9%, Northwest owns 12.5%, and Continental has an 8.8% stake. Cendant, which owns Amadeus' rival GDS Galileo, has been also named in speculation over a possible move for ebookers.
