Boscolo Hotels: a family business

In less than thirty years, the four Boscolo brothers made the “small” family affair evolve into a hotel and tourism group with an international dimension. It all started with the takeover of a hotel in Venice in 1978 by the group’s founder, Bruno Boscolo. Today, his four sons Angelo, Giorgio, Rossano and Romano have full control over the business and share the directors’ positions of the different subsidiaries. Its supply of 21 hotels with 4 and 5 stars will soon grow with the opening of the new Exedra Milano.

Since it took over the hotel Airone in 1978 in Venice, the Boscolo family has made a fine reputation as shrewd entrepreneurs with regular emblematic openings. Revenues for 2008 are close to 300 million euros from three major activities: accommodations (50% of turnover), touroperating and F&B. In fact, the constitution of the group is representative of a strategy of business diversification into activities that reinforce one another, of a concentration of vital management and sales functions while outsourcing secondary services. And while the invention of new concepts for its the restaurant business should lead to the growth of a network of restaurants through franchising, in the hotel industry the will of directors remains fiercely attached to property control.Until now, no doubt has been cast upon the hotel development though ownership philosophy, aside from a few exceptional management opportunities that may arise. This will naturally lead to controlled development at a pace of one hotel every three years, but the group is still young, and the third generation already taking the helm.Born in Venice, the group first developed locally to lay the foundations of the hotel chain. The hotels Ambasciatori and Real rapidly joined the company of the Airone and ten years later is was the Bellini di Venezia’s turn, the chain’s first luxury located in a historic palazzo on the Grand Canal. At the same time the family created its own travel agency, Boscolo Tours, in order to feed its hotels through tourism programs. In 1990, Boscolo Tours became a tour-operator specializing in the Italian domestic market. In the 80s, Rossano Boscolo, an already renowned chef, founded the Boscolo Etoile Academy to train professionals in modern culinary techniques.
