
At the last Global Lodging Forum, the Deputy Inter-ministerial Delegate for France's candidacy for the World Expo 2025 revised the impact the two events could have on France's tourism industry and economy.
The Olympic Games and the World Expo will first and foremost boost the image of France and its capital, giving it a more powerful international reach. The televised broadcast of the Olympics reaches more than three billion viewers worldwide, while the World Fair will attract international tourist to our country for six months.
The two events will also accelerate the adaptation process of infrastructures. This was already begun with the official creation of Grand Paris in January 2016, which gave the capital the installations necessary for organizing major events. They also make it possible to improve transportation, particularly with the Roissy Charles de Gaulle Express, the extension of the metro lines 11 and 14 and the creation of new lines (15, 16, 17 and 18) to circle the capital. The deadlines of 2024 and 2025, will thus require the construction calendar to be respected.
Finally, the organization of the Olympics and the World Expo will be a real economic lever. 45 million tourists are expected during the six months of the Expo, 20 million of which may be attributable to the event itself. It should have a positive impact of 0.4% to 0.5% on the GDP, with 23 billion in additional spending in the country and the creation of 160,000 sustainable jobs. For the Olympics, 15,000 athletes and 25,000 journalists from around the world are expected for the competition. To this may be also be added additional tourist arrivals, which rose to a total of 1.6 million tourists for the Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
In order to host all these visitors, they will have to be accommodated, but France's hotel supply is currently not large enough. Paris falls short by some 55,000 rooms that would need to be developed by 2024 and 2025.
