As of January 2017, in the European Union (still composed of 28 countries), the two first hotel groups keep their positions. AccorHotels remains the leading operator in terms of number of rooms, with 282,814 rooms throughout the territory in its 2,604 hotels. The group developed its supply by +2.2% in the EU in 2016, mainly through growth of its ibis family brands (and especially ibis Styles), MGallery, Pullman and Sofitel. InterContiental Hotels Group remains in the second place, with 92,234 rooms. In the EU, IHG's supply is up by +1.4% in comparison with 2016 because of the development of its offer under the Holiday Inn & Holiday Inn Express brands.
This year, the American hotel group Marriott International reached third place the ranking of hotel groups established in the EU, with 88,824 rooms, up by +7.2% in comparison with 2015. This move brings Best Western into fourth position, with an offer down by -12.5%. The fifth, sixth and seventh places remain occupied respectively, as last year, by Louvre Hotels Group (69,469 rooms),Whitbread (65,291 rooms) and Hilton Worldwide (57,993 rooms).
Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group gains one place on the ranking to occupy eighth position with a portfolio up by +2.1% for a total of 52,361 rooms. NH Hotel Group also gains one position, despite a supply in decline by -2.1% and reaches ninth position because its Spanish rival Melià Hotels Grouplost two places to fall to tenth position.
