Built in 1906, the building that housed the War Office until 1964 was acquired by an investor of Indian and Iranian origin who plans to renovate the building to turn it into a hotel.
The Old British War Office is being converted for a well-deserved retirement. The conglomerate of Indian and Iranian origin, Hinduja Group, and its Spanish partner, Obrascon Huarte Lain Desarrollos (OHLD), have acquired the historic building in London, with a goal to transforming it into a five-star hotel. The transaction, for an undisclosed sum, was made with the British Ministry of Defence on a 250-year lease arrangement.
The new owner will launch a program to renovate this atypical building. Distributed among seven floors, it has 1,100 connected by close to three kilometers of hallway that will be converted into a hotel: luxury rooms, upscale residences , as well as a spa/ fitness club. It will be a radical change for this building that served as the wings for the stage of the two World Wars and where Winston Churchill once lived.
