As summer begins, Hungarian tourism professionals are at ease. For several months results on the sector have been improving, producing some of the best in Europe.

After a good year 2014, tourism in Hungary has progressed since January 2015. The sector is fully benefiting from a favorable economic situation and the European recovery, which encourages the arrival of foreign tourists.

According to the Hungarian Statistical Office, close to 3.4 million tourists stayed in commercial accommodations in the country between January and May 2015, producing some 7.9 million nights on the period, or 6% more than last year, allowing for 8.2% growth in turnover forthe sector. Overall, tourists spent more than 213.4 million euros on accommodations, a figure that is up 10.1% over the first five months of 2014.

Attracted by the destination's competitive pricing and encouraged by Europe's economic recovery, foreign travelers have made a strong contribution  to the new improvement of results. Germany remains the leading source market for tourists at the destination, followed by the United Kingdom (where arrivals increased by 26% on the first five months of the year), and Austria (whose travelers to Hungary increased by 8.3%).

Foreign visitors are not the only contributors to the growth of tourism in Hungary. The domestic source market has also progressed significantly in recent months with the implementation of the  Széchenyi (SZÉP Card), an electronic leisure card that replaces traditional vacation checks. In May alone, 495,000 people stayed in tourist accommodations in the country, or 7.4% more than last year, producing close to one million nights, up 6.1% over May 2014.

In light of the strong presence of foreign and domestic clientèle, hotels in the country were able to considerably improve their rersults. The 3.7 point rebound in their occupancy rate and 8.3% increase in their average daily rate even allowed them to post some of the strongest growth in Revenue per available room (RevPAR) on the European continent, for growth by about 15%.

In such a favorable context for travel to Hungary, hoteliers are satisfied at this beginning of the summer season, when tourist arrivals generally reach their peak. Tourist arrivals generally increase between April and September in Hungary.
